Acclaimed performance artists Laura Kalauz and Martin Schick to make SA debut
Acclaimed performance artists Laura Kalauz and Martin Schick are headed to Southern Africa for the first time, for a series of performances presented by Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, Swiss Arts Council.
Kalauz and Schick will presentCMMN SNS PRJCTwhile Schick will work with a local guest dancer to presentHALFBREADTECHNIQUE (postcapitalism for beginners). The performances will take place in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Maputo in November and December.
BothCMMN SNS PRJCTandHALFBREADTECHNIQUE (postcapitalism for beginners)offer audiences humorous, yet unsettling, insight into alternative ways of thinking about the money economy, capitalism and sharing – particularly relevant in the context of the current international debate on revolution.
CMMN SNS PRJCTsees Kalauz, an Argentinian-born independent choreographer based in Zürich and Schick, a Swiss freelance performer and choreographer working out of Berlin, use theatre as an arena of free trade and adventure and as a way of breaking down prevailing conventions. In a piece that has already captivated audiences in Europe, Kalauz and Schick start this by welcoming the audience in their underwear, and handing out a variety of objects for free.
First introduced at Julidans Amsterdam 2012,HALFBREADTECHNIQUEis a funny and mind-triggering performance guided by Schick that investigates post-capitalism living and raises the question of how much we need for our own personal prosperity. The show has been described as "an amazing experience" and “wonderfully liberating” by viewers.
The Johannesburg performances of CMMN SNS PRJCT and HALFBREADTECHNIQUEtake place from November 18th to 20th, at POPArt in the Maboneng Precinct and WITS Downstairs Theatre.
Kalauz and Schick then move onto Cape Town where both HALFBREADTECHNIQUE (November 22nd) and CMMN SNS PRJCT (November 23rd) will be performed at the Cape Town City Hall as part of LAND. The latter is an interdisciplinary event about land, territory, ownership and art, presented by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), and taking place at various spaces throughout Cape Town.
Early December the series moves to Maputo, Mozambique where the performances take place within the 5th Kinani Contemporary Dance Festival at the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambican. This year’s Kinani Festival examines the effect of globalism on culture, proving a powerful context for the performances of HALFBREADTECHNIQUE and CMMN SNS PRJCT in Mozambique for the first time.
Kalauz and Schick are also due to present a workshop during their Southern African visit.
